For the 26th time since 2006, H.J. Martin and Son has been honored with the 2024 Build Wisconsin Award by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Wisconsin. The award was given in the Specialties Contractor – Finishes category for the work completed at the Bellin Surgery and Specialties Center.

Located at 905 Waube Lane, this five-story, 270,000-square-foot facility brings together multiple healthcare specialties under the Bellin Health name. The addition of this new center allows Bellin to lower healthcare costs by 20% to 40% compared to hospital-based surgical facilities. Jim Dietsche, Bellin Health’s Executive Vice President and CFO, emphasized the organization’s commitment to reducing healthcare expenses. Additionally, the facility has added 450 jobs to the Green Bay area, comprising both new hires and relocated employees.

The Waube Lane property holds special significance for H.J. Martin and Son and the Martin family, as they have owned the site since Menards closed in the fall of 2016. Centrally located off I-41, the property was described by H.J. Martin and Son President and CEO Edward Martin as a “diamond in the rough.” Martin noted, “The Waube Lane site is an entryway to Lambeau Field. You have to have a vision and a use for it.” That vision became a reality when the Martins were approached by Bellin Health to purchase the property.

In partnership with general contractor Miron and architect HGA, H.J. Martin and Son contributed to the project through several divisions: Glass, Walls & Ceilings, Commercial Flooring, and Fixtures, Furniture, and Equipment (FF&E). Trade crews were on-site for two years, completing a wide range of tasks. The drywall and ceiling teams handled steel stud framing, drywall installation, and ceiling grids, while glaziers installed 34,000 square feet of interior and exterior glass. Meanwhile, FF&E teams installed patient room furniture, waiting area seating, and gym equipment for the orthopedics department.

Coordination was a key element of the project’s success. The steel stud framing team worked closely with other trades to ensure framing was completed ahead of schedule. This allowed spaces to be topped out, insulated, and fire-sprayed before other trades began, creating a streamlined and efficient workflow. During the cold Wisconsin months, the drywall team collaborated with the general contractor to establish temporary heated zones, enabling steady progress without compromising quality.

Flooring crews installed more than 180,000 square feet of carpet, tile, and welded sheet vinyl. The orthopedics area featured intricate designs with multiple colors of vinyl, requiring precise heat welding to create seamless finishes. Additionally, 12 operating rooms, the OR core, and a large sterilization room were outfitted with Altro White Rock hygienic wall cladding, which demanded certified installation expertise.

H.J. Martin and Son is proud to be recognized by the AGC of Wisconsin for its work on the Bellin Surgery and Specialties Center. As a long-standing leader in construction, the company remains committed to delivering quality craftsmanship and impactful projects that benefit the communities it serves.
